PC Mag reported that this number is likely to increase again before the end of the year, as Sony has lowered the price of the PlayStation 4 to $50.

"We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PlayStation 4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago," according to Sony CEO Andrew House.

Sony's rivals such as Microsoft and Nintendo have not announced their own sales figures this year, but VGChartz reported that Sony is winning the console war. According to the website, PlayStation 4 sales reached 28.4 million and the Nintendo's Wii U is approximately 10.9 million, while Microsoft's Xbox One has sold 15.6 million units. Last month, the Xbox One dominated sales in the US for the first time since April, possible boosted by sales of Halo 5: Guardians.

According to Sony, the PlayStation 4 has the "fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history."

PlayStation 4 is available in over 124 countries around the world. Sony chose to promote the PS4 with a variety of titles. The company reported that they will be releasing a handful of new titles, including Ryu Ga GotokuKIWAMI, Dragon Quest Builders, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters Edition, Gravity Rush Remastered, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, as well as indie games like Super Time Force Ultra and GALAK-Z.

Recently, Sony confirmed that PlayStation 4 will feature a backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games. This is Sony's counter strategy after Microsoft's announced backward compatibility of Xbox 360 games in their current console.

Sony said that in the near future they will let gamers play classic PlayStation games on PlayStation 4 console, but there are no full details yet.
