The participants involved in the research were children from ages 6 to 7. Over 600 children examined in the study and 58 percent of them have pet dogs at home. As stated in the study, a DartScreen was completed by the parents of the children before the doctor's checkup. DartScreen is a comprehensive Web-based child health screener using an electronic tablet.
The results did show positive results - and not surprising. Children who live with pet dogs have lower anxiety level compared to those children without dogs.
NBC News reported one of the researchers Dr. Anne Gadomski explaining that animals are more likely to provide comfort and self-esteem to children between ages 7 to 8 than humans.
"From a mental health standpoint, children aged 7 to 8 often ranked pets higher than humans as providers of comfort and self-esteem and as confidants," the researchers said, noting that its either less anxious kids have pet dogs or pet dogs make kids less anxious.
Gadomski agrees that a special bond can be created between children and their pet dogs, adding that it is a possible that a child's first word is the name of their dog.
"Sometimes their first word is the name of their pet," she told the NBC News. "There is a very strong bond between children and their pets."
To further intensify the results of the research, the researchers have recommended that further studies is conducted on how dogs can alleviate childhood anxiety.
