China's government is working to improve the country's environmental issues, including the air pollution that is enveloping major cities. Critics say these environmental issues are the by-products of the rapid economic growth of the country.

The city's government has attracted criticisms from organizations like World Health Organization and Greenpeace over the environmental conditions. The proclamation of the alert seems to be the result of the disapprovals of the different groups.

Director of he Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs Ma Jun said that the warning was essential to the children's health. The notice will prevent children from being exposed to harmful level of air pollution. He also added that the announcement had been difficult for the Chinese leaders. The government found it hard to decide not because of political or financial reasons, but because of the difficulty of organizing a major emergency alert.

The smog would lasts until Thursday, and rain is expected to clear away the harmful smog. Power plants run by coal are said to be the major cause of the health-damaging smog.

Air pollution in Beijing is appaling, but air pollution in areas outside and surrounding the city is said to be more horrific.
