Following the revelation, OtherSide Entertainment released a statement confirming the "System Shock 3" is indeed under development. OtherSide Entertainment's press release has a subject line that reads, "SHODAN returns in System Shock 3."

In an interview with Game Informer, "System Shock 2" writer and designer Ken Levine said, "I'm so deeply involved in the themes of our new thing, our new game is a science fiction game. It involves themes like artificial intelligence and what it means to be programmed, that you are a thing that was created by programming."

For those who are not familiar with the "System Shock" universe, SHODAN is the antagonist AI of the franchise which appears to have survived following the closing events of "System Shock 2."

The first "System Shock" game was released in 1994 on the MS-DOS PC platform. Five years later, a narrative sequel to the first game was released dubbed "System Shock 2." The second game in the franchise was developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass.

Despite the success of the two "System Shock" games, the franchise was discontinued. It was later followed by a series of "BioShock" games, which is hailed as the spiritual successor of "System Shock."

Not counting the "BioShock" games, players and fans of "System Shock" have waited for more than a decade for the third installment to be released.

Some of the developers working on the upcoming "System Shock" game are also part of the team that worked on the previous two titles. Among these are Looking Glass founder Paul Neurath, "System Shock 2" senior artist Nate Wells and lead concept artist Robb Waters, who worked on both "System Shock" and "System Shock 2" games. Terri Brosius, who was the original voice of SHODAN, is also reprising her role in the upcoming sequel.
