MMA fighter Eddie Alvarez is now headed to UFC to face Donald Cerrone after his release from Bellator on Tuesday.

In an announcement by the UFC, the said match will be headlined as the co-main event for UFC 178 that will take place in Las Vegas on September 27.

Bobby Green who was originally lined up against Jorge Masvidal, was supposed to face Cerrone in the said event. Instead, Green will fight in one of the company's future events and Masvidal will have a match against James Krause at 178.

In December of 2012, UFC offered Alvarez (25-3) a contract to join the company. With Bellator having matching rights, the organization matched the initial deal given by the UFC. Alvarez and Bellator had a dispute that led to court hearings.

The process forced Alvarez out of the spotlight. After almost a year, the 30-year-old decided to let go of the trial and signed a new contract with Bellator. Alvarez did not really want to be with the company until his release was granted by Scott Coker, the new Bellator president.

The two-time lightweight champion has been considered as one of the best in the world and one of the best pound-for-pound fighter who is yet to debut in the Octagon. His exciting wins were over tremendous warriors like Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Pat Curran, and Michael Chandler.

On the other hand, Cerrone (24-6, 1 NC) is a fan favorite that already logged 4 wins this year. Last month, "Cowboy" knocked out Jim Miller in the second round of their match.

Cerrone wants to achieve the UFC record of competing six times in a single year. With Cerrone currently ranked as 4th in the UFC lightweight division, the winner of the Alvarez-Cerrone collision will be closer to a title shot.

UFC 178 will feature Demetrious Johnson's flyweight title defense against Chris Cariaso. The Jones-Cormier fight was supposed to be the main card of the event before Jones had a leg injury last week.
