Cold Wave Experienced In Most Areas Of China

Shanghai, China

Snow could fall in country's biggest city and business hub - Shanghai.

For the first time in a period of three years, snow is predicted in Shanghai. A cold wave in northern China has set the temperature to its lowest points in quite a long time.

Some inhabitants of Shanghai have had the desire to witness snowfall, while provinces like Jiangsu and Zhejiang have seen snowfall already. Shanghai residents' desire may surprisingly come true.

Meteorologists said that Shanghai was faintly warmed due to winds blowing off the sea, and by the city's "heat island effect." However, most areas will soon experience a plunge in temperature.

In Hong Kong the temperature is anticipated to drop to 5 degrees Celsius - this drop in temperature is expected to happen by early Monday. Ta Kwu Ling in North District near the border is projected to -1 degrees.

A yellow cold alert was released by the National Meteorological Center on Friday morning. The yellow cold alert is the second highest on a four-level scale. The areas particularly prone to the cold are the central and eastern areas of mainland China.

In the coming three days, areas covered by the alerts can  expect the temperature to drop between 14 to 6 degrees. This cold wave has triggered hiking enthusiasts to go "ice chasing tours" to Ta Mo Shan in New Territories. It is the highest peak in Hong Kong, reaching 957 meters.

The temperature in Hainan Island, southern part of Hong Kong, will plummet to below 10 degrees. The island is famous for its white sand beaches and palm trees. Furthermore, Hangzhou City's visibility drops down to 900 meters. Even airports such as Xiaoshan International was affected by the snowfall. The airport cancelled 43 of 642 flights on Thursday, while airport workers de-iced 133 planes.
