Chinese President, Prime Minister Emphasize Need for More Stringent Food Safety Measures

Chinese leaders call for need to implement more stringent food safety regulations

(Photo : Getty Images) Both the Chinese president and prime minister in separate instructions emphasized the need for the "strictest" and "zero tolerance" food safety measures, especially with the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.

China's President Xi Jinping released an official instruction on Thursday highlighting the importance of implementing the "strictest" food safety measures.

Xi, who is also the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's general secretary, called on all officials to do their respective duties to the people, noting that food safety impacts not only livelihood of people, but also citizen's confidence in the government.

Xi admitted that the food safety reputation in the country is critical, suggesting the need for a more systematic and definitive supervision system and supporting policies. He further emphasized that there should be more stringent protocols such as implementing serious penalties or punitive measures, conducting meticulous supervision process and developing an administrative accountability system.

Premier Li Keqiang, on the other hand, also released a separate instruction which also emphasized on "zero tolerance" to violations of food safety protocols. He called for grave disciplinary actions to enterprises found guilty.

Furthermore, he encouraged all offices of the government to take the matter as a big issue and to always maje the interests of the people a top priority. He emphasized the need for reform and obedience to rule of law. He also said that food safety monitoring system should cover the entire food production process, that is, from farm produce to consumers' tables.

On Thursday, the State Council Food Safety Commission conducted its third plenary meeting officiated by Vice Premier and also Head Commission Zhang Gaoli. 

During the conference, Zhang claimed that in order to enhance food safety, supply-side structural reform is a must. He vowed to take resolute efforts to implement out the instructions provided by the Chinese president and the prime minister. He also pledged to develop a new management system that will improve food safety and supervision.

Of note, Zhang stressed that excessive pesticides residue and veterinary drugs including additives in food and soil metal pollution should be paid attention to, suggesting food establishments found guilty of doing otherwise should be held liable. 

The food safety standards in the country should be in-line with China's realistic situation and global standards, the vice premier said. Described as a "sacred political duty," he called for close monitoring to see to it that all regulations are properly implemented and those guilty are held accountable. He further underscored the importance of food safety especially with the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.
