Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins of Major League Soccer Club Seattle Sounders has reportedly joined Shanghai Greenland Shenhua of the Chinese Super League in a multi-million dollar deal.

Martins, 31, had a very triumphant 2014 season with the Rave Green -  his second with the Seattle, Washington-based club - and was named as one of three Landon Donovan MVP Award finalists. The Nigerian professional footballer was also selected as part of the MLS Best XI. Martins, who formerly played for the English Premier League side Newcastle United in 2006 to 2009, won the MLS Goal of the Year award that same season.

Martins has scored 43 goals in 84 MLS appearances since joining Seattle Sounders in March 2013.

During his spell with the Serie A Italian outfit Inter Milan, the Nigerian national started to become well-known. In his three seasons with the Magpies, Martins has netted 35 goals.

Martins had 41 international appearances representing his country Nigeria, a three-time African champion, where he registered 18 goals. In 2003 and 2004, the former Reggiana footballer was voted Africa's most promising talent.

Shanghai Greenland Shenhua recently signed Australian Tim Cahill from the New York Red Bulls of the Major League Soccer, Senegalese Demba Ba from the Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas and Colombian Fredy Guarin from Inter Milan.

Chinese clubs have been very active in the transfer window, enticing high profile international players from different leagues around the globe.

Martins will be the latest addition to the growing number of African players switching to China.

Liaoning Whowin recently signed Congolese central defender Assani Lukimya-Mulongoti, while the former AS Roma forward and Ivory Coast star Gervinho and Camerronian Captain Stephane M'Bia joined Chinese Super League newly promoted club Hebei China Fotune.
