Reigning English Premier League champions Chelsea FC is reportedly targeting veteran Uruguayan footballer Diego Godin as a potential replacement for team captain John Terry when the latter exits Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old Terry's contract with the Blues is set to expire this summer and the England national football team captain had already announced that he will not come back with the club next season.

There were rumors that he will move to China to join five-time Chinese Super League winners Guangzhou Evergrande, especially after his solo tour in the country last year.

Even when Chelsea's interim head coach Guus Hiddink said that there is still a chance that Terry might sign an extension with the club before the season ends, a lot of speculations regarding his potential replacements have come out and one of them mentioned the name of the Atletico Madrid vice-captain.

Metro indicated that Godin is being considered by the Pensioners to fill the hole that Terry will leave because of his "leadership qualities".

The 29-year-old center back is also known as one of the best and stingiest defenders in La Liga right now and could be what Chelsea is looking for to get back among the EPL's elite next season.

In comparison, Godin has played in 22 games for Atleti this season while Terry has appeared in 20 for the Stamford Bridge residents and have both scored a goal, as per Bleacher Report.

The Rosario, Uruguay native is better than the Englishman in all the other defensive categories such as tackles per game (2.6 to 0.9), interceptions per game (3.5 to 1.7), and clearances per game (5.5 to 3.9).

Terry has a superior blocks per game stat, though, with 0.8 as to Godin's 0.3, and he is also a more accurate passer with 89.9 percent passing accuracy as compared to the Uruguayan's 81.1 percent.

When it comes to playing style, it was said that "there may be no better replacement" for Terry than Godin as both of their approaches are similar.

"Like Terry, Godin is forceful in the air, strong in the tackle and superb at sniffing out danger," the report says.
