Samsung Gear VR, one of the very first mass produced virtual reality headset, is getting a major upgrade. The South Korean tech giant has announced that its flagship virtual reality device will be receiving a new feature thanks to an update from Facebook.

The announcement was made during Samsung's press conference ahead of the 2016 Mobile World Congress. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased the new Dynamic Streaming feature of the Samsung Gear VR at the press meeting.

The Facebook-owned virtual reality company Oculus is providing the software for the Samsung Gear VR. Oculus will introduce a new 360-degree immersive video feature for Samsung's virtual reality headset.

In a statement, Zuckerberg said, "The idea is that instead of delivering the whole video in high-resolution, we just focus on the part you're looking at. This allows us to deliver the video with a much higher resolution and quality - about 4X - while also reducing the overall bandwidth consumed. I'm excited to announce that we will bring all these technologies to Gear VR in the next few years."

Zuckerberg also highlighted Facebook's role in the development of the virtual reality platform and added that the company is one of the platform's front runners.

Many tech analysts have noted that the partnership between Samsung and Facebook will be beneficial not only to both companies, but also to the whole tech community, especially the fledgling virtual reality platform.

For Facebook and Oculus, Samsung will be providing an excellent point of entry for users to get their hands on top-quality virtual reality contents through its widespread mobile ecosystem. The Oculus Rift currently costs $599 and requires quite a lot of PC hardware requirements. On the other hand, the Samsung Gear VR only costs $99 and is regarded by many analysts as one of the best entry-level virtual reality devices.
