Messaging application Snapchat has announced a new update that will allow users to use its geofilter feature. Prior to this announcement, Snapchat's geofilter feature was restricted to public places like colleges, cities and neighborhoods. The new update will allow users, brands and businesses to use the feature and create their own custom geofilter.

For the uninitiated, geofilters is a feature that appears on Snapchat when users try swipe left on an image, given that they are in a valid. For example, a user in California can apply a handful of California-exclusive filters on their photos.

With the recent update, users can take advantage of this feature and create their own geofilter for businesses, parties, private events and more. But the feature comes with a price.

Users and businesses who want to take advantage of the unique geofilter feature will have to shell out $5 in order to use it. The price goes up depending on the amount of time the geofilter will last and how big the area is that it covers.

Snapchat claims that the geofilter feature is a big way for businesses and brands to uniquely advertise their products.

The geofilter feature requires a minimum geofenced area of 5,000 square feet to be functional. This requirement makes it ideal for weddings or small corporate events. On the other hand, users can still expand that area to up to 5 million square feet.

User also have the option to choose a time period for their own unique geofilter. It can last for an hour or up to 30 days.

Once users have designated a specific geofilter area and created their own unique filter, they can submit it to Snapchat for approval.
