The Phoenix Suns have signed shooting guard John Jenkins on Wednesday two days after he was waived by the Dallas Mavericks.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Jenkins had led Dallas in the preseason with an average of 19.7 points in seven games, fifth in the league at that time, as per Fox Sports. He was not utilized well during the regular season, though, as he suited up in just 21 games for the Mavericks, starting one, and had averaged 3.3 points and 1.0 boards in only 9.2 minutes a night.

Jenkins spent his past three seasons in Atlanta when the Hawks selected him as the 23rd overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft. His rookie year was his most productive in terms of stats as he averaged career-highs of 6.1 points and 14.8 minutes per game playing in 61 games for the Hawks at that time.

He spent most of his last two seasons in Atlanta with NBA D-League squad Bakersfield Jam and was only recalled by the Hawks for 13 and 24 games during the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons respectively.

According to Bleacher Report, Dallas released Jenkins after they signed power forward David Lee, who himself was also recently waived by the Boston Celtics.

The former Vanderbilt standout was reportedly signed on a three-year minimum salary deal worth $3.2 million.

"The minimum salary exception only accommodates two-year deals, so Phoenix is using part of the $1.56M trade exception it created in the Markieff Morris deal last week," the report says.

Los Angeles Times' Eric Pincus said that at 24 years old, Jenkins just "needs to get some real run on a bad team" to show his true potential. He had been a major contributor during preseason games but had not had enough playing time in the regular season to show his true wares.

Jenkins is reportedly set to receive plenty of action in Phoenix as the Suns have struggled all season, donning a 14-44 slate at this time, second to the last place in the West with the Los Angeles Lakers only worse at 11-48.
