Tech giant Google is rebranding one of its services. Google's satellite imaging service formerly known as Skybox Imaging has a new name - Terra Bella - and it has a new feature which focuses on image analysis.

Skybox Imaging, as it was formerly known, was acquired by Google in 2014. Aside from the name change to Terra Bella, the division will not only focus on sending small imaging satellites into orbit, but also analyze subsequent images that it produces.

In a statement, Skybox founders Dan Berkenstock, John Fenwick and Ching Yu Hu wrote, "As proud as we are to have played a leading role in developing satellite technologies, we have realized that our vision extends far beyond boxes in the sky. As Google revolutionized search for the online world, we have set our eyes on pioneering the search for patterns of change in the physical world."

With this change of course, Terra Bella will gain access to Google's geospatial data sources as well as the tech giant's machine learning capabilities. While Terra Bella opens up a new service for Google, what this service will look like is still yet to be seen. The team behind Terra Bella promises that it will provide constant updates regarding the division's development.

Some tech analysts speculate that Terra Bella will focus on mapping, according to Slash Gear. However, some experts believe that this might be too drab for a company like Terra Bella. With a wealth of resources coming from Google, no one really knows for certain what services Terra Bella will bring to its parent company.

On the other hand, while the partnership with Google opens up a new prospect for Terra Bella, the startup remains steadfast to its roots and claims that it will continue to build its own spacecraft. The company said that it is planning to send at least a dozen more satellite into orbit within the next couple of years.
