The Google-owned navigation app Waze has received a new feature that will warn drivers when they are driving over the speed limit.

The new feature was launched in 18 countries, including Austria, Brazil, Colombia, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and Uruguay, with the United States gaining functionality sometime in the future.

The alert does not sound like an alarm automatically, but it will just stay in the corner of users’ apps until they return to a legal speed. The alert will blast across the screen until you drop down into the legal zone. Drivers can also customize the warning to show up once they have reached the speed limit, or when they are travelling five, 10, or 15 percent above the limit. They can also select to have an audio warning. Waze did not explain how it determines if the driver has exceeded the speed limit. One possible way is tapping into GPS data to find out how fast the driver is travelling and then compare it to the speed of other users.

Waze has already launched a feature that warns people about where police officers are stationed along roads and highways based information provided by other users, as well as other hazards on the roads. The new speeding alerts’ goal is to eradicate the problem altogether. Waze’s other useful tools and features include calendar integration and departure alerts for planned drives.

Waze is an Israeli company that was built in 2007 and built an impressive reputation for the way it lets users share real-time traffic data. That is the reason why Google acquired the company for more than $1 billion back in 2013. Waze is not the first company to launch such feature. Other GPS providers such as Garmin and Magellan offers similar speeding warning feature for years now.
