Venus Williams, Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci, and even Peng Shuai have done well so far in the singles match play as all have advanced into the third round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion Williams surged on to the third round as she beat Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Williams, 34, committed only 19 unforced errors and produced 20 winners to outlast Bacsinszky in an hour and 25 minutes.

Williams will face 13th seed Sara Errani in the next round.

Errani, 27, defeated Australian qualifier Anastasia Rodionova also in two sets, 6-4, 7(7)-6(5).

The Italian's best singles performance in the tournament was in 2012 when she reached the semifinals where she was defeated by eventual champion Serena Williams.

Both Williams and Errani are part of a Grand Slam winning team, of course Venus is partnered with sister Serena and Errani is teamed up with fellow Italian Roberta Vinci.

The Williams sisters are set to play their opening match against the recent Wimbledon women's doubles runners-up Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic on Thursday.

Wimbledon women's doubles defending champions Errani and Vinci will also play Thursday against the team of Andreja Klepac and Maria Teresa Torro-Flor.

Vinci won her match early Wednesday against Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 and is also going up against half of the French Open women's doubles champion Peng Shuai of China.

Shuai upset fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round to earn her a chance to fight Vinci in the third round.

Another set of doubles players are also in to the third round, Lucie Safarova and Alize Cornet are scheduled to face each other Friday.

Safarova is partnered with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in doubles and Cornet is teamed with Kirsten Flipkens who were defeated in the first round also on Wednesday.

The winner of the Safarova-Cornet match will meet the winner of the Shuai-Vinci game in the fourth round.

Last year's women's doubles champions Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka will not be defending their title this time for they now have different partners, China's Jie Zheng is now the partner of Hlavackova while Michaella Krajicek of Netherlands is Hradecka's teammate. They did not participate however in the singles competition.
