The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in making former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt their chief bench tactician next season.

NBC Sports reported that while interim head coach Kurt Rambis is still the number one option of team president Phil Jackson to retain New York's head coaching job in 2016-2017, the 56-year-old Blatt is one of the top names being considered for the unenviable position of trying to reestablish the Knicks as one of the top teams in the NBA.

The report cited ESPN's Ian Begley as saying that "Jackson views Blatt favorably" and "it's also worth noting that Blatt played basketball with Knicks GM Steve Mills at Princeton".

Blatt has been one of the most successful coaches in the NBA despite his short actual experience in the league, leading the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in his first year as head coach and then to a 30-11 record (0.732 percentile) this season before getting fired on Jan. 22nd of this year.

However, there were rumors that his big ego and communication issues have all contributed to his downfall in Cleveland as he allegedly has not earned the trust and respect of his players, particularly superstar LeBron James. It remains to be seen whether Carmelo Anthony (a long-time friend of James) would accept Blatt because of that.

Another problem in Jackson's potential hiring of Blatt would be the latter's non-affinity to the triangle offense as the former Princeton Tigers standout is more of a Princeton/motion type of tactician.

If Jackson is not ready to scrap the triangle offense for another system then Blatt is definitely not the head coach New York wants for the long term.

ESPN also noted that other big-name coaches being considered for the Knicks job are Brian Shaw, Tom Thibodeau, Jeff Van Gundy, and Mark Jackson, with the last three all connected to New York while the first one, Shaw, was a former pupil of the triangle offense in Los Angeles.
