Badminton News: China’s Lin Dan Beats Indonesia’s Christie Jonatan to Advance to Quarterfinals of Singapore Open

(Photo : gettyimages.com) Five-time world champion Lin Dan of China has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open.

Badminton's current world No.4 and tournament second seeded player Lin Dan of China successfully navigated through the quarterfinal round of the OUE Singapore Open 2016 after defeating the 25th ranked Christie Jonatan of Indonesia on Thursday.

According to Xinhua, the two-time Olympics champion Lin dominated the match with a 21-13, 21-7 triumph over the Indonesian youngster in front of a boisterous crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

"Today is my second match and I did not expect so many fans to turn up so I'm very happy and grateful to them." Lin said. "I tried my best to control my rhythm on the court. I came out and did quite well. I did not give my opponent any chance," the five-time world champion, who wrapped up the match in just 34 minutes, said.

With the victory, the 2006 and 2007 Eddie Choong Player of the Year recipient will be facing another Indonesian shuttler Tommy Sugiarto, who was the 2013 Singapore Open champion.The 27-year-old Sugiarto is presently No. 9 in BWF world rankings.

Meanwhile, women's singles No. 1 player of the world Carolina Marin of Spain marches to the quarterfinals after beating No. 26 Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand in two straight sets 21-19, 21-15 with a strapped left ankle, having rolled it the day before when she faced the Indonesian Lindaweni Farnetri in the opening round.

"(My ankle) is not good but, after I taped it, I didn't have to think about it on the court," the 22-year-old Spaniard said.

The tournament's last champion, world No. 14 Sun Yu of China overpowered Japan's incumbent world No.4 and recent All England Open champion Nozomi Okuhara with a spectacular 21-16, 21-11 victory. Another Chinese player He Bingjiao also made it into the quarterfinals.
