While speculations are running wild that Apple is going to acquire OLED displays from rival tech company Samsung, there are reports that the Cupertino-based company has indeed placed an order for millions of OLED panels from the Korean giant.

Apple has reportedly ordered 100 million units of 5.5-inch OLED panels from Samsung. The ordered panels are scheduled for delivery 2017, and are unlikely to be installed in the upcoming iPhone 7. Instead, they could be used for the iPhone 7S. The number of displays ordered could also mean that the Korean company will be Apple’s supplier for years.

According to a source cited by the Chinese version of the Wall Street Journal, Samsung has made a deal with Apple worth $2.6 billion (3 trillion won). Samsung is said to have dedicated a production line in one of its plants specifically for Apple’s order, and will continue to produce OLED displays for the company for three years.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI analyst known for accurate ly predicting Apple's moves, said that the 2017 iPhone will have a 5.8-inch display, contrary to the reported 5.5-inch OLED display size that Apple has ordered from Samsung.

Should the reports be true, Apple might have opted to use Samsung’s OLED displays for the new iPhone considering that OLED panels are cheaper than LCD displays. Apple has been using Samsung-made memory chips for some time now, therefore it would not be impossible for the company to also opt for its OLED display.
