A leak recently surfaced claiming that Apple might finally ditch the iconic aluminum casing of its flagship device, the iPhone. The tech giant is said to be planning to release an iPhone made entirely of glass in 2017.

The information was released by prominent analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities. Kuo has a long history of correctly predicting upcoming Apple products. According to Kuo, Apple is planning to completely redesign the new iPhone, which is expected to hit the market in 2017.

Kuo claims that instead of the ubiquitous aluminum casing used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, Apple is planning to use an all-glass enclosure. Experts believe that this new design will perfectly complement the new cutting edge curved OLED display, which is supplied by Samsung.

This is not the first time that the Cupertino-based tech giant will used glass in its iconic smartphone. Years ago, Apple used glass back and front panels for its iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s devices. The smartphones also sported a stainless steel band sandwiched between the back and the front panels.

One of the many problems faced by the glass-made iPhone is that it breaks easily. Customers expressed their frustrations regarding durability issues and since then Apple decided not to use glass panels.

It is still a mystery how Apple can pull this one off. Some tech experts believe that advancements in glass technology can make this possible by 2017. Moreover, the possibility of a glass enclosed device not only presents improvements in aesthetics, but also wireless charging and increased antenna reception.

Adopting an all-glass design will also set Apple devices apart from most of its competitors which are slowly transitioning from plastic chassis to aluminum casings.

There are speculations that the iPhone 8 will be launched later this year. The device is expected to look a lot like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s.
