Five people were reported dead on Sunday after their single-engine plane crashed while attempting to land at a Colorado airport north of Denver.

According to Peter Knudson, a spokesperson from the National Transportation Board, three of five people riding the Piper PA-46 died inside the plane wreck while two others died while they were being treated in hospitals.

All passengers were confirmed dead at 4:30 in the afternoon.

Erie police reported that the plane was found several hundred yards northwest of the airport runway.

According to investigators, the single-engine plane containing five people took off from the Centennial Airport in the south.

Reports stated that the plane was set to land at the Erie Municipal Airport but had crashed around 11:50 a.m. 25 miles north of Denver.

Authorities declared a clear weather on that day, citing that the plane crash couldn't have been caused by winds or rain.

A driver passing by who witnessed the decline of the plane reported the crash to authorities.

She described it as flying "really, really low" with a sputtering sound and then it was quiet.

Witness Jan Culver added that during the plane's descent, some people were already, in her words, "out of the plane."

The wreckage is to remain on site while the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are probing the cause of the crash.

NTSB records indicate three similar incidents in the airport within the past two years. However, no fatalities were recorded in the previous plane crashes.

The last death reported on the site was in May 2011 when a 64-year-old plane seller, Christian Hansen, crashed upon takeoff after suffering from cardiac arrest during his attempted ascent.

The airport in question can be found 13 miles east of Boulder and 20 miles north of Denver.
