As China steps up its efforts to ensure the quality of cars sold in the world's largest car market, Nissan Motors and its Chinese joint-venture partner Dongfeng Automobile announced plans to recall nearly 58,000 vehicles in the country.

A statement published by China's top quality watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said the vehicles will be recalled due to air bag malfunctions.

The Chinese automaker plans to recall 11,059 China-made Infiniti QX50 models produced between December 27, 2014 and April 20, 2016.

The recall also includes 25,627 China-made Infiniti Q50L models manufactured from October 16, 2014 to April 20, 2016.

Nissan, meanwhile, plans to recall 12,375 imported Infiniti QX60s manufactured between November 13, 2013 and April 15, 2016. As well, it plans to recall more than 8,000 imported Infiniti Q50s manufactured from February 6, 2014 to April 20, 2016.

According to the statement from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the recall will be issued due to the air bag defects triggered by software problems in control units.

Such malfunction could be dangerous to the drivers and the passengers of the vehicles mentioned, the watchdog added.

The recall, according to the administration, will start on September 20 and both Nissan and Dongfeng promised to replace the defective parts at no cost to the owners.

Car recalls are common in China, the world's biggest auto market, as Chinese consumers demand the highest quality of vehicles that are sold to them.

Stiff competition among foreign and local car manufacturers also benefit the Chinese market as car producers make sure the vehicles they are selling in China are of the highest quality, with those offering defective vehicles sure to suffer from plunging sales.

Last year, nearly a million vehicles imported to or manufactured in China were recalled due to various defects and safety and security issues.
