The parents of a baby boy born with 31 digits are currently looking for money to pay for their child’s surgery, reports say.

The child, nicknamed Honghong, had 16 toes in his feet (eight each) and 15 fingers in his hands (eight in one, seven in another), had no palms nor thumbs, reports People’s Daily Online. His parents, both from rural Hunan province in China, are now scrounging for money to pay for his surgery in the hopes of having his extra digits taken out.

Honghong’s predicament is a rare and extreme case of polydactyly, a medical condition where children are born with extra digits, reports Daily Mail. Although polydactyly occurs once in every 1,000 births, Honghong’s case is a unique one in terms of the number of extra toes and fingers that he has.

Honghong’s mother also has extra fingers and toes. Worried that her child might inherit the condition, she went to hospitals in Shenzhen multiple times to have her baby checked for any deformity. She was told that her baby was perfectly normal.

She also went to Shenzhen’s Futian District Maternity Hospital to have her baby checked via a four-dimensional ultrasound. Again, she was told that her baby had no deformity. However, both parents were surprised to discover that their child had digits surpassing the amount that his mother has.

Doctors tell Honghong’s parents that the surgical procedure needed to take his extra digits off will be difficult for him, noting that although he is too young for anesthesia, he needs to undergo surgery at six months to a year old, before his bones will set.

Unfortunately, the cost of the operation is too much for his parents, and is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of yuan or tens of thousands of U.S. dollars. They are currently looking for ways to raise the amount needed for surgery.
