New Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is firm in snatching Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan this summer despite reports that the German midfielder is set to undergo a major surgery to repair an injured knee.

The 45-year-old Spanish head coach is said to be "determined to complete the signing" of the Germany international when the summer transfer window opens in July even though the player dislocated "his kneecap earlier this month", as per Daily Mail Online.

Gundogan is reported as one of the main targets of Guardiola ever since it was announced in February that he will take over from Manuel Pellegrini as City head coach at the end of the season. He remains to be, for that matter, as the Spaniard boss is willing to "press ahead with the transfer" as they want to wait for him to fully recover already at the Etihad's side.

Speculations abound that Guardiola is intending to make Gundogan the substitute for current midfielder Yaya Touré, who is allegedly on his way out of the Etihad once his former Barcelona boss comes in this summer.

Guardiola and Touré have a sour history in between them as the latter was accusing the former of selling him to City in 2010 when both are still with the Catalonia giants.

Gundogan has almost missed an entire season before due to injury. In 2013-2014, he played in only three games all season as he recovered from back problems, but he was able to come back strong in the next season for now Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp's cause.

Caught Offside noted that the 5-foot-11 Gelsenkirchen, Germany native is "ruled out" to participate in the coming Euro 2016 for his home country after suffering the kneecap dislocation.

The injury is said to "require serious surgery in order to remedy" and so Gundogan will not be available for the European championship which will be held from June 10 to July 10.
