Christie was on top of the world after pulling off a stunning victory over his own sports idol 21-12, 21-12 in a game that lasted for 36 minutes. The 18-year-old Jakarta native had the upper hand as he faced the two-time Olympic champion on his home turf at the Istola Galera Bung Karno Indoor Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

"I thank all the amazing supporters. They succeeded in boosting my stamina throughout the match so I didn't feel tired," said Christie, who was part of the Indonesian men's national team that won the silver medal at the recently concluded 2016 Thomas Cup in Kunshan, China.

After the loss, 32-year-old Dan refused to take part in a press briefing and went directly to the locker room. According to Badminton World Federation regulations, a player is obligated to present oneself at a press conference and answer questions from the pool of journalists, and failure to comply carries a penalty of US$250.00.

The win pits the young Indonesian shuttler against the incumbent world No. 5 Jan O. Jorgensen of Denmark on Friday. The 28-year-old 2015 German Open Grand Prix Gold champion got the better of the 26-year-old current world No. 23 Vincent Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong, China in another second round match with a straight 21-16, 21-16 victory.
