After expanding to more than 100 new countries in January, Netflix is planning to raise the bar higher by producing a new original series from India. The yet to be titled series is expected to be made available globally, but it is unclear when it will be released.

The US streaming giant is currently said to be working on developing a new web series based on Vikram Chakra's novel, Sacred Games, according to Mashable. While the beginning of production is yet to be determined, it has been announced that the new project will be filmed in India.

Aside from author Vikram Chandra, Netflix is also working with Phantom Films, one of India's leading production companies, to create the upcoming series.

"We are delighted to partner with creative powerhouse, Phantom Films, to bring Vikram Chandra's epic novel to life with the best Indian and global film talent available today," Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix said in a statement. "Sacred Games reinforces our commitment to bring the authenticity of local stories to Netflix members across 190 countries worldwide."

Like many of Netflix's popular web series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, this upcoming show also delves into social conflicts and controversial issues.

Sacred Games is an epic novel that explores crime, corruption and politics. Set in Mumbai, the story follows two contrasting characters: a Hindu gangster and a Sikh policeman. Before it was published in 2006, Vikram worked on the novel for seven years by interviewing and researching the life of gangsters.

"Over the last few years, I've watched with great excitement and pleasure as Netflix has transformed narrative television with its ground-breaking, genre-bending shows," Chandra said. "I'm confident that all the colour and vitality and music of the fictional world I've lived with for so long will come fully alive on the large-scale canvas provided by Netflix. I'm thrilled to be working with Netflix and Phantom Films."

Earlier this year, Netflix also announced the official pickup of two new original series: Edha and Dark. The upcoming dramas will be produced from Argentina and Germany, respectively.
