Homeland is shaping up to be more politically inclined in the upcoming sixth season. The most recent development about the spy drama is that the next season will feature a female president elect, series star Claire Danes said at an event in New York on Tuesday.

Danes, who plays the lead character of Carrrie Matheson in the series, said that the female POTUS will not be the show's representation of Hilary Clinton.

Instead, she's "kind of a composite of all of the different candidates and a kind of - not rebellious necessarily - but she's challenging norms and is a little threatening for that reason."

The actress also noted that Carrie, for her part, will share a good relationship with the female President as they get along "pretty well."

The news comes after Showtime's announcement in May that season 6 will tackle the upcoming United States presidential election. Executive producer and showrunner Alex Gansa previewed the storyline in an interview.

"The whole season takes place between Election Day in November and the inauguration of a new president in January, during this strange and interregnum where a very fragile transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Viewers should note that even though the election will come into play, the series does not plan on basing its story off of headlines. Instead, it will revolve more on the aftermath of the election rather than the election itself, Gansa added.

Viewers will also get to see these events unfold in the city of New York, which comes as a new spectrum for the show since it has shot previous seasons in countries like Germany and South Africa.

Earlier this month, Showtime boss David Nevins announced that they are nearing a two-season renewal for the spy drama, but that is yet to be made official.

Homeland season 6 premieres this fall on Showtime.
