The opening Group D match of the UEFA European Championships 2016 will be played between the t two dark horses of the tournament, Turkey and Croatia, at the Parc de Princes Stadium in the French capital of Paris on Sunday.

The defending champions Spain and Czech Republic are the two others teams in Group D.

The Croatian national football team, which suffered an embarrassing defeat against Turkey in the quaterfinals of the Euro 2008, now looks to avoid a repeat of the same.

The team's star midfielder Luka Modric believes Sunday's game against Turkey will be key for his side's performance in in the European competition.

"I think the group is really difficult. Firstly we play Turkey, then Czech Republic and finally Spain. I think the first match will be key. If we manage to win, our path to the knockout stage will be easier," Modric told MARCA.

"It will be hard as always against Spain, one of the best teams in the world. I hope we have already booked our ticket to the next stage by then. Our first goal is to advance past the group stage and I feel we are very capable of accomplishing it," the Real Madrid player added. 

The Turkish team, which is returning to the competition after a gap of eight years, is looking to replicate their 2008 success against their Croatian rivals.
