Ed Sheeran is being dragged to court for allegedly stealing the musical composition of his hit song, Photograph. The British singer/songwriter is being sued for copyright infringement by songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard.

According to the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Harrington and Leonard claim that Sheeran stole the musical composition of Matt Cardle's single, Amazing, which was released in 2012.

Cardle, also a British singer, is the winner of X -Factor Season 7. He worked with Harrington and Leonard to co-write the song Amazing.

Photograph was another smash hit for Sheeran after the release of Thinking Out Loud. The song's official music video has more than 200 million hits on Youtube.

The chorus of Photograph and Amazing have 39 identical notes, according to the plaintiffs. As songwriters, they claim that both songs share similar melodic rhythms, harmonies, and overall structures. In the court documents, Harrington and Leonard attached copies of both songs for comparison.

Other parties being sued include co-writer and Snow Patrol pianist Johnny McDaid, as well as Warner Music Group and other music publishers.

The plaintiffs are represented by Nashville lawyer Richard Busch, who also worked on the case of Marvin Gaye's multi-million dollar copyright lawsuit over Robin Thicke's hit 2013 song, Blurred Lines.

"My clients are professional songwriters," Busch said in a statement. "Their work is their life, and I am honored that they have trusted me with this very important case."

The plaintiffs have requested for a jury trial and are seeking $20 million in damages and royalties from the song.

Cardle addressed this issue via Twitter on Wednesday, urging the public to "read news articles closely" because he is not involved in the lawsuit.
