"The Walking Dead" season 7 make-up effects supervisor Greg Nicotero recently explained why it was necessary to end the previous season with a controversial cliffhanger.

While speaking with IGN, Nicotero said, "It propels our people. It affects our people profoundly, as it does in the comic book. That changes everyone's direction. The main thing about season 7 is establishing that the world isn't what everybody thinks it is, the world out there. At the end of season 6, Rick was so confident. 'We're just going to knock out that outpost, we're going to f*ck these guys before they f*ck us up,' and it ends with him going, 'Heh, oh well, I had no idea. What I perceived as the world is not even close to what the reality of the world is,' and Negan's there to show him that," he explained.

Meanwhile, Nicotero confirmed that some new world will be introduced on the show. This is another reason why he believes that season six's ending was must to set the pace for season 7.

In other news, the make-up effects supervisor also urged fans to not immediately assume certain characters' fates based on what they see online. He revealed that they are not filming the episodes in order so it's possible that their guess on who met Negan's Lucille isn't correct.

Additionally, Nicotero also talked about the Walkers and reminded fans that they are one of the most important characters on the show.

"That's what 'The Walking Dead' is. It's always important to keep walkers relevant in the show. That's why the gags that come up, if there's an episode that doesn't have a ton of walkers, there'll be some awesome gags in it that you'll just be blown away by," he said.

"The Walking Dead" season 7 will air on AMC on Oct. 9.
