The movie spinoff of The Office has landed a spot on Netflix and will be available for streaming in 2017. British comedian/actor Ricky Gervais revealed the news on SiriusXM's Opie Radio on Tuesday.

"This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I'm going to say it now. Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again," Gervais said on the radio show. "Which is great for me, because I'd rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it's great."

Gervais wrote and directed his latest project with the streaming giant titled David Brent: Life On The Road. It is a mockumentary formatted like The Office, which follows Brent's journey as he chases his dream of being a famous rock star. The movie is set 15 years later following the finale of the original series.

Entertainment One (eOne) has partnered with BBC to finance the movie spinoff. The company will handle distribution in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand as well as the film's theatrical release in August.

The Office debuted in the UK in 2001 on BBC and ran for a total of 12 episodes, receiving positive reviews from critics. It has been labeled as one of the greatest British situational comedies of all time and has won accolades in 2002-2003 from the British Comedy Awards and the Golden Globes.

Other memorable stars of the sitcom include Martin Freeman, Mackenzie Crook, Lucy Davis and Oliver Chris.

In 2003, NBC adapted the show under the same name. Steve Carrell played the role of Gervais' David Brent, who was renamed to Michael Scott. The US adaptation, which also received critical success and a strong fanbase, ended after nine seasons of airing.

David Brent: The Life On The Road is set for a global release in 2017 exclusively on Netflix.
