Zhang Mengxu won China's first gold medal in Rio Olympics 2016 by claiming the women's 10-metre air pistol event on Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

This is the first time that Zhang is participating in the Olympics, but the 25-year-old shooter defied her inexperience as she showed immense composure during the finals on Sunday.

Zhang claimed the final with a score of 199.4 points in 20 shots. The score was well-ahead of 19-year-old Russian Vitalina Batsarashkina, who finished with a score of 197.1 and secured silver medal. The bronze medal went to Greece's Anna Korakaki.

Zhang established a solid lead against her two counterparts midway and eventually won with a 10.9 perfect shot in the final rounds. Her final score of 199.4 points is an Olympic record under the new format.

By securing gold, Zhang perfectly made up for the shocking exit of her co-competitor Guo Wenjun from qualification round. Guo Wenjun failed to make it into the finals this time, finishing 30th place in the qualification round.

"I was pretty calm for the final actually, because the qualification was a bit tough for me," Zhang said.
