Shanghai Disneyland is expected to build additional attractions as it announced that its number of visitors has already reached more than one million.

Known as the Shanghai Disney Resort, the 3.9-square-kilometer theme park located in Pudong District, opened on June 16. Regular tickets are sold at 370 yuan ($57) and 499 yuan during peak season like holidays and weekends.

Walt Disney Company chair and chief executive officer Robert Iger noted that they have gotten the kind of reaction they have been hoping for from their guests, China Daily reported.

"Ticket sales are strong," Iger said about the Shanghai Disneyland performance. "People are staying in the park longer than we ever imagined they would."

"It's obviously far too early to identify trends and make forecasts or projections, but Shanghai Disney Resort is clearly off to a strong start," he added.

It was also noted that hotel occupancy has been steadily pegged at 95 percent.

"Before the gates even opened we were already planning for the future," he continued. "Our first expansion is now under construction, and we have plenty of room to add new lands, attractions, hotels and more."

In the meantime, China.org reported that Shanghai Disneyland has received complaints from some customers after the resort allegedly refused to refund their tickets for the rides that have been reportedly closed "suddenly" for maintenance.

Accordingly, certain rides, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure and Roaring Rapids, were closed to the public on Aug. 7 allegedly without prior notice.

"I was very sad when I heard the broadcast telling us we couldn't go on the ride, since we have already waited for over two hours."

Shanghai Disneyland is a joint project of Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group.
