Chinese authorities have decided to temporarily shut down the Zhangjiajie glass bridge after officially opening it to public barely 13 days ago. Officials have cited maintenance work as the main reason for the temporary shutdown, the BBC reported.

"We're overwhelmed by the volume of visitors," a spokesperson from the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon's marketing and sales department told CNN, explaining that the bridge was unable to cope with a huge number of visitors during the first two weeks.

The capacity of the glass bridge was restricted to 8,000 visitors per day, but demand exceeded 10 times more that, the spokesperson added. When asked whether the bridge has broken and cracked, he said: "there was no problem." He confirmed that there havs been no accidents so far on the bridge.

The news of the temporary shutdown was also confirmed by management company responsible for maintenance of the bridge. The company announced the news on its official Wibeo account, saying that due to the "urgency to improve and update" the facility, the government decided to suspend operations on September 2.

Meanwhile, several visitors who were planning to visit the glass bridge have expressed their displeasure on Weibo account, with many describing the temporary shut down as completely unfair.

The glass bridge in Zhangjiajie town was open to public with a lot of fanfare nearly two weeks back, with record breaking people turning up on the first day. Being the world's highest and longest glass bridge, the public anticipation for the bridge was immense. The bridge is 430 meters long and stands 300 meters above the ground level.
