German auto manufacturer Volkswagen Group has recalled about 281,500 units of the Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Golf GTI hatchbacks with year models 2015 and 2016. Volkswagen is also recalling the Golf SportWagen wagon, and luxury model Audi A3. The company said that the recall is due to a potential gas leak that was recently discovered.

The reason for the recall is an issue with the affected cars' suction pump which is located inside the fuel tank. The problem may cause fuel to flow into the evaporative emissions system. Once fuel accumulates in the system, it may trigger a leak through the charcoal canister filter element.

Volkswagen confirmed that the following car models would be covered by the recall: 2009-2009 Audi Q5, 2007-2012 Audi Q7, 2012-2013 Audi A6 and A7, 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen SportWagen, Volkswagen GTI, Audi A3, and A3 Cabriolet.

There is a major potential risk to this, hence the decision to issue the recall order. According to USA Today, Volkswagen said that the problem would increase the risk of fire once the accumulated fuel is near an ignition source.

Volkswagen will cover the cost of replacing the suction pump. The company has urged owners of the affected cars to take it to their dealers to get the fault fixed.

Volkswagen said that it will begin sending out notifications to affected customers in November and will send a second notification once replacement parts are available. Volkswagen is yet to confirm whether the problem is isolated to the United States.
