Manchester United is reportedly targeting Barcelona striker Luis Suárez for a world record transfer of $165 million.

Suárez is part of arguably the best-attacking trio in the sport right now with five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi and Brazil captain Neymar. However, a lot of world-class clubs are rumored to be interested in acquiring the Uruguay international's services.

Rumors have it that Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils are prepared to entice the Catalan giants with a staggering $165 million for Suárez, which would break the current transfer record of $109 million that United spent in signing Paul Pogba from Juventus in August.

Despite the club's $208 million spending spree in the recent summer transfer window, Mourinho has only led his side to the eighth spot of the current Premier League table as the team has been winless in five of their last six games.

ESPN reported that "since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure, there's been a lack of thought in the club's development," so another huge expenditure is likely to happen soon.

Suárez has been a profilic goalscorer throughout his career. He has had a record-breaking winning streak with Barça since he arrived from Liverpool in the summer of 2014.

Suárez has won two La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, one Supercopa de España, and one UEFA Champions League trophy in two seasons so far with Barcelona.

His third season with the Catalan team is starting out as planned with the striker scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games in all competitions while the team is two points behind league-leading Real Madrid in the Spanish top flight after 10 games.

Meanwhile, SkySports indicated that Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has downplayed the rumors linking Suárez to United, saying that the team is only interested in keeping last season's European Golden Shoe awardee "happy" at the Nou Camp.

"We read, we listen, we see this news, but of course, our interest in this particular case is that Luis Suárez is happy at Barcelona," said Bartomeu. "For me, he is probably the best striker in Europe and we want him to be with us. Right now, we are trying to extend his contract with Barcelona and he is one of our big future efforts because he is still young, he has a vision, a lot of ambition."

"He is happy at Barcelona and together with Lionel Messi and Neymar, they are really very dangerous," the team president added.
