The new SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 was recently released for the Raspberry Pi single board computers. The new SUSE Linux Enterprise Server version now supports both the Raspberry Pi 2 and the new Raspberry Pi 3 devices.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is based on the upstream Linux kernel specifically designed for the ARM operating system. SLES for Raspberry Pi was designed to support the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B SBC, the computer's integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sensors, as well as its Broadcom BCM2837 64-bit A53 ARM processor.

In a statement posted on the official SUSE blog, the company said, "Yes, we actually took the enterprise grade, 64-bit Linux operating system that is used around the world to support mission-critical workloads in financial institutions, air traffic control centers, manufacturing centers, and high-performance computing centers - and put it on a $35 credit card-sized computer."

The SLES for Raspberry Pi uses Btrfs for its root file system, and ICE Windows Manager is the default desktop environment. It also has an integrated GCC 6 support, which is highly recommended for program compilation from sources.

The SLES for Raspberry Pi binary image is now available for download. It is also important to note that SUSE does not offer commercial support. According to Softpedia, although registration is not mandatory, users are required to register in order to receive and download patches and updates.

The SLES for Raspberry Pi comes with a free one-year self-service registration. However, it was declared on the disclaimer that the content is not supported by SUSE and there are possibilities that SLES for Raspberry Pi might not work on some systems.
