Iran refused to join the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), according to the nation's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday.

Khamenei's announcement on his veto of the U.S. invitation to join the anti-ISIL coalition came as Washington said it would not seek Iran's military cooperation in its efforts against the terror group, FirstPost reported.

State-run news firm said the U.S. ambassador in Iraq requested for a meeting on the fight against ISIL, which has already captured portions of Syria and Iraq. However, Khamenei opposed the invitation because he was doubtful of the motives of the U.S.

"I saw no point in cooperating with a country whose hands are dirty and intentions murky," IRNA cited Khamenei as saying.

According to Khamenei, he chose not to work with the U.S., a nation that the ISIL has branded as "the Great Satan." Despite U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's statements that Washington did not want to cooperate with Iran in matters related to anti-ISIL efforts, Khamenei continued to insist his side.

The Iranian supreme leader said the U.S. is lying when it said they excluded Iran from the broad coalition. He insisted that Iran was against the joint effort from the very start, the report continued.

On Monday, Paris hosted a conference to talk about strategies for defeating the jihadist group. Iran had no representative in the said event.

Khamenei described Washington's motives in forming the coalition as "hollow and self-serving." He said the U.S. only wanted to have an area in Iraq that they can freely conquer and destroy, much like what it had in Pakistan.

Reverting to the long-term conflict that the U.S. had with armed Iraqi fighters, Khamenei cautioned the U.S. against proceeding with the anti-ISIL movement.

Should the U.S. pursue the fight against the jihadist group, the same situation in Iraq ten years ago would come back and haunt them, Khamenei said.
