China has lashed out at a recent military intelligence agreement signed between Japan and South Korea.

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Gen Shuang condemned the new Japan-South Korea military intelligence pact and called it a result of cold war mentality of two countries. He also warned that the pact will further worsen the confrontation on the Korean peninsula.

"Intensified cooperation between relevant countries based on the deeply entrenched Cold War mentality for the sharing of military intelligence will only worsen the confrontation on the Korean Peninsula," the spokesperson told reporters in Beijing on Wednesday.

He asked Tokyo and Seoul to respect the security concerns of regional countries when finalizing the deal. Shuang also termed the pact a move against the peaceful development in the region. "While carrying out military cooperation, relevant countries should take seriously the security concerns of regional countries."

The United States, on the other hand, welcomed the agreement, saying that it will strengthened military intelligence cooperation between Japan and South Korea. US defense secretary Ash Carter said that by sharing intelligence information, two of its closest allies in the Korean Peninsula would enhance their deterrence posture against North Korean aggression.

On Wednesday, Japan and South Korea signed the General Security of the Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), which will enable both countries to share intelligence reports on North Korea's controversial nuclear and missile development program. Japanese ambassador to South Yasumasa Nagamine and South Korea's defense minister Han Min-koo formally signed the deal in Seoul. GSOMIA is the first-ever military pact between two countries.
