US President-elect Donald Trump recently confirmed that he was able to have a phone conversation with Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook about his intentions to convince Apple in building its products in the United States instead of abroad.

In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said, "I said, 'Tim, you know one of the things that will be a real achievement for me is when I get Apple to build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States, where instead of going to China, and going to Vietnam, and going to the places that you go to, you're making your product right here'."

Apple is yet to release its official statement regarding Trump's request.

Many tech and market analysts agree that convincing Apple to move its manufacturing arm into the U.S. will not be easy. Manufacturing jobs in the U.S. have been in steady decline for at least 15 years, according to some statistics.

For one, many companies, not only Apple, are attracted to cheap labor provided by countries like China and India. Companies can save a lot of money by outsourcing their labor to developing countries, which offer competitive wage rates.

China is currently one of the biggest manufacturing hubs in the world. A significant portion of components used in building Apple products come from China.

According to The Verge, experts said that it is efficient and inexpensive for a company like Apple to have components used in its supply chain be manufactured in the same country or region.
