The world's highest bridge has finally been opened to traffic on Thursday in Southern China, and it was immediately overwhelmed by netizens who could hardly wait to check out the new engineering miracle, state media reported.

The Beipanjiang Bridge located in Guizhou province has been under construction over the last three years. Located above 1,854 feet and stretching almost 4,396 feet long, the bridge sits spectacularly above the Beipan River. The engineering marvel has been constructed with a budget of more than $146.7 million.

After Thursday's official inauguration, the Beipanjiang Bridge became the world's highest bridge, surpassing the Sidu River Bridge, which stands above 1,500 feet in Hubei Province, China.

The construction of Beipanjiang Bridge was completely wrapped up in September, but officials kept postponing the inauguration due to technical reasons. The massive bridge is expected to reduce the travel time between Xuanwei city and Shuicheng county by almost three hours.

The Chinese government has been on a construction spree over the past several years, which has brought many massive infrastructure projects across the country. Analysts said that China wants to demonstrate its new found economic prosperity to the world through these massive infrastructure projects.

In August, China opened the world's highest and longest glass bridge in Hunan province with a lot of fanfare. However, barely 13 days after its official inauguration, the glass bridge was temporarily shut down owing to tourist pressure.
