Facebook Will Block Trolls' Devices On New Rooms App

(Photo : Facebook) Facebook does not want its new Rooms app to become a place for trolls to terrorize users, and will actively block devices, instead of users.

There are plenty of trolls on the Internet. On almost every platform where conversation is open to anyone, there will be people who add zero-input and only look to antagonize others, either through annoyance or harassment.

Facebook Rooms looks to be an easy way for trolls to lurk and destroy good message boards, especially if the creator offers the QR code to anyone in the vicinity. But Facebook will not let these trolls live for long.

In fact, Facebook will actively look to block the device of a troll to make sure they cannot come back on another account. This has not been added to most mobile apps, making it hard for moderators and owners to fully delete a troll from the service.

The potential for harassment has been multiplied by the fact users don't have to go under their real name. Creating an alias makes it much easier to be a troll without consequence, although signing into Facebook might scare a few people who would otherwise try to be annoying.

Facebook Rooms is currently available on iOS only, with an Android app in the works. The target demographic is people who want a chat-room similar to the 1990s on the Web, or people who are interested in a more social environment, with the same anonymous protocols - similar to Yik Yak and Streetchat.

The app is still new and nobody knows how strict Facebook will be against trolls and harassment. For now, it is good enough to hear Facebook has at least some plans on how to deal with toxic people on Rooms - instead of on Snapchat and Yik Yak where they are able to roam free.
