Luxembourg-based 3D scanning technologies company Artec Group recently launched Shapify, the world's first full human body scanning technology in the U.S.

Shapify was previously launched in June in two ASDA supermarkets located in the U.K. Artec reportedly developed the technology to target retail stores such as Waltmart.

Shapify allows users to print realistic three-dimensional customized figurines or miniature statues of themselves.

It's basically a booth that scans an entire human body in just 12 seconds and then prints what the company calls a "shapie," which is a new term for a 3D printed "selfies."

The company aims to popularize the 3D scanning technology in famous tourist sites, shopping malls, theme parks, event venues and also for memorable occasions.

"Shapies are perfect for capturing life's milestones in 3D figurine form like birthdays, graduations, a wedding, pregnancy, or even this year's awesome Halloween costume," said Artec.

"As a kid, you may have gotten into a photo booth with your friends and had a strip of pictures printed out to commemorate the occasion." said Artyom Yukhin, CEO of Artec Group.

"Our goal is to have this generation do the same thing, but add another dimension and in the end have a 3D printed figurine to solidify the memory."

Shapify uses four high-resolution cameras that revolve around a person to scan every angle. Artec claims the cameras have the ability to scan every detail precisely, even down to freckles.

The 3D booth uses algorithms that automatically connect generated pieces of the person's surface. It later produces a file that's ready for printing.

Retail stores can rent the 3-D scanning technology for US$10,000 per month, or purchase them for US$180,000.

Artec will print the figurines for retailers. The company offers US$50 for a 6 inch figurine, US$70 for a 7.5 inch, and US$100 for a 9 inch.

Retailers will also have the option to print the 3D figurines themselves if they prefer.

"The Shapify Booth will be the first experience many people have with 3D scanning and printing technology," Yukhin added.
