Vickers was credited with shooting the suspect during a shooting incident October 22, in which a gunman killed a soldier and ran through Parliament shooting before being shot dead himself.

Few moments before gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was shot to death during the Parliament Hill siege, Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers did a daring dive to put a stop to his violence.

Based on the incident reports, 58-year-old Vickers was among the first responders on the scene when Bibeau attacked the parliamentary office. Sources on Saturday revealed that Vickers was standing behind a column on Centre Block, where the gunman's rifle was visible from his vantage point.

The assailant initially had an encounter with security at the entrance of Centre Block before making his way inside the building. A response team immediately zoomed in towards Bibeau before Vickers dove and fired simultaneous fatal gunshots that eventually killed the gunman.

Bibeau, who was suspected as a terrorist, attained several gunshot wounds before the police force secured the area. Vickers then returned to his office to reload thinking that the attacker might have other accomplices.

Afterwards, he barricaded the Tory caucus room where Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his MPs were held, and then subsequently told them: "I engaged the suspect and the suspect is deceased."

Minutes after the commotion, people of Ottawa are calling Vickers the new modern hero of Canada. A petition led by Brett Bell urged the parliament to award Vickers the Order of Canada, the second highest commendation to be given to a citizen for exemplary courage and bravery.

Bell said he was able to gather 150 signatures for the campaign. Surprisingly, Vickers was set to receive the Cross of Valour, an award given to civilians who did incredible acts.

Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino praised Kevin, who he recognized as a former RCMP and now a considered hero. Also, Senator Bob Runciman said that everyone inside the Tory room applauded Vickers.

"We will never know how many people he saved," Runciman added. Vickers was shaken after the incident and said that it was a very unforgettable experience, the former Ontario solicitor-general added.
