Verizon Wireless and AT&T have not had the most promising third quarter compared to Sprint and   T-Mobile, which together have added on millions of new subscribers.

In order to bring some new subscribers into the fold of their own, both Verizon and AT&T are upping their data amounts, while simultaneously dropping the price for customers.

Verizon Wireless has dropped its $100 10GB plan to $80 per month and its $110 15GB plan to $100 per month. The two new prices should appeal to those who want large data plans, but still don't reach the 20GB data plan Sprint is currently offering.

AT&T is increasing the amount of data on its $40 shared plan, from 2GB to 3GB per month. Its 6GB shared plan will have a price drop, from $80 to $70 per month. Again, not huge drops by any standards, but they are interesting to see from the second-largest wireless carrier.

Sprint currently has the lowest prices on the market, in a reform from owners SoftBank, to try and keep the third largest wireless carrier afloat. T-Mobile has had excellent success through most of 2014, and Sprint needs to keep up if they want to remain relevant.

Numbers published earlier this month still put Verizon Wireless as the number one carrier in the U.S., with AT&T second and Sprint third, but T-Mobile is definitely catching up.

In terms of carrier functionality, Verizon Wireless still wins when it comes to consistency, stability and speed on their network, followed by a slower but more stable AT&T. Sprint has good penetration in some states, but lacks the nationwide presence of the two other carriers, T-Mobile suffers from this lack of nationwide presence as well.
