(Photo : Reuters) It might be a little early to start the leaks for the iPhone 7, but one source in Taiwan is confident Apple is building a glasses-free 3D display for the next generation smartphone.

Apple is already looking into new displays in Taiwan, according to a new leak. Economic Daily News is reporting Apple is in search of a 3D display supplier for the iPhone 7, one of its major features.

The iPhone 7 3D display will be glasses-free and provide new technology for apps to show their content outside of the normal parameters. This would allow apps like Apple Maps to show much more depth, through the 3D effect added to the device.

Touch-screen manufacturer TPK is reportedly working out a deal with Apple to supply the displays. Apple will be looking for tens of millions of units in the next year, something TPK might be able to supply given their size and resources.

This is not the first smartphone to offer a 3D display, Amazon's Fire Phone had a similar concept, but the phone has fallen flat on the market. Apple is hoping that the same fate will not hit them, and they will be smarter about how to approach the 3D effect.

3D has been in the pipeline for quite some time for Apple; in 2008 a patent was approved for a "Three Dimensional Display System"; in 2014 another patent was approved for an "Interactive Three Dimensional Display System" showing further progress on the same idea.

Apple will use the 3D display to influence new markets and buyers to acquire the iPhone 7, perhaps running out of new ideas for the smartphone. The iPhone 5S introduced Touch ID; the iPhone 6 came with the biggest displays; the iPhone 6S might push new NFC services forward to third party developers, on top of a larger camera.

The 3D display will reportedly be pushed out by Apple before launch on the iPhone 7, in order to get developers to make their apps work with the new dimension.
