Apple Watch Open to Developers with New SDK

The smartwatch world could dramatically change, depending on the success of the Apple Watch. Like the iPhone and iPad before it, Apple has the power to change the aesthetic, function and UI for the future devices, if the first iteration becomes popular.

In order to improve the chances of success, Apple has launched the Apple Watch SDK, allowing all active developers to port their apps before the official launch of the smartwatch in spring 2015.

Already, developers like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are checking out the SDK, to see what differences the new interface offers. The change in user interface and app design could bring some vastly different app designs from developers.

It could also bring new apps into the fold, from developers who want to utilize the power of the smartwatch. Location, health and fitness apps could become extremely popular on Apple Watch, if they offer features Apple's own apps don't.

The SDK, named WatchKit, will offer various APIs for different sensors on the Apple Watch. Developers have not expressed distaste or happiness in the APK, although it does have some limitations in the first release.

There are alternatives to Apple Watch already on the market. The Moto 360 and LG G Watch R are the most popular, using Android Wear. Both watches have a similar design to normal watches, making it an easier transition.

Samsung also managed to sell 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatch units, the first iteration came with Samsung's homebrand Tizen OS. Samsung has continued to build Tizen OS smartwatches, the most recent being the Gear S, a larger and more expensive option.

Apple is looking to sell tens of millions of Apple Watch units in 2015, according to reports from Taiwanese chip makers.
