South Korean tech giant Samsung Group recently unveiled new eye-tracking technology that helps disabled people navigate computer interfaces using their eye movements.

The new technology called the "EyeCan+" is a successor to Samsung's EyeCan device, which was designed for the same purpose.

Unlike other technologies targeted at people with disabilities, Samsung's EyeCan+ doesn't require users to wear any device. It's a simple portable device placed below a computer monitor.

It uses eye-movement tracking technology to help users navigate computer interfaces, and as a replacement for a keyboard and mouse.

"Though EyeCan may seem like a simple device, we are hopeful it can help improve the quality of life for those suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) and Locked-in syndrome (LIS)," said the EyeCan team.

Samsung said it doesn't intend to sell the new product directly, but plans to launch it as an open source platform. The South Korean tech giant also plans to donate the technology to charities.

"We really enjoyed making the EyeCan, and since this is an open-source platform, we hope that more and more people will jump in to improve the device. EyeCan is currently not for sale," Samsung added.

"The EyeCan project team is providing only the technology. Our hope is that this technology can spread to reach people in need."

Users can use the device by either sitting or lying down not more than two feet away from it. Once the device is connected to a computer monitor, a menu will appear on the screen with 18 different commands.

Users simply have to look at a command or icon and blink once to execute it.
