Twitter Adds New Anti-Harassment Tools

Twitter is adding new features for its anti-harassment suite and promises faster response from the support team, when dealing with harassment.

The new set of tools makes it much easier for Twitter to be notified of the harasser or victim of harassment. Users will now be able to report abuse for themselves or other people, potentially celebrities, to get trolls off the social network.

Users now also get the option to decide what type of harassment the reported account is using. It could simply be disrespectful or offensive, threatening physical harm or harassing the user with spam.

Twitter should be able to deal out the appropriate justice with the information, making sure to remove spam accounts, block harassers and make sure users with the same IP cannot move to a second account to continue harassment.

The changes require less initial information and rely on the user ticking a few options. Twitter will investigate if the threat appears serious or a lot of reports are sent.

Twitter is also updating the Blocked Accounts page on the main page, allowing users to add more options to the blocked accounts. Blocked accounts will not be able to view the user's profile at all now, making it impossible for the harasser to interact.

The update to the blocking and reporting tools comes after an increase in harassment on Twitter. Various accounts - known as throwaways - are used to attack certain individuals for beliefs, family or opinions.

Twitter has to be measured in its approach to banning, as we have seen in the past week, various high profile journalists and critics have been temporarily blocked from Twitter, following mass report spam campaigns.

Separating harassment from free speech will be a hard task for Twitter in the next few months.
