Twitter CFO Leaks Potential Acquisition of Unknown Company

Twitter CFO Anthony Noto made a remarkable mistake two days ago, sending out a private direct message (DM) on Twitter to all of his 9,500 followers.

The private message contained Noto appealing to someone on the decision to acquire a company. Noto is obviously speaking to the head, claiming the owner of the company in question is "on his schedule for Dec 15 or 16" and he will need to "sell him" to Twitter.

It's all quite cryptic, but it is clear from the tweet that Twitter is looking to acquire a company. Who is the lucky startup? Well, that remains to be seen, and we probably won't hear about it until 2015, but here are some likely companies.

Secret

The social anonymous app is part of a growing trend of apps, working to make sure identity is hidden, while people can continue to be social.

Secret should be an easy snap up at $100 million valuation in July, even though this might have ballooned to as much as $500 million. If not Secret, other anonymous apps like Yik Yak, Streetchat and Whisper are available for Twitter to check out.

Yo

The excitement behind Yo has died out, with the app falling from fourth in the U.S. charts to below 1,000 in two months. However, the service still has large amounts of funding from investors and a new location service on the way.

Twitter's DM service is awful (as we can see by Noto's issues) and adding a simplistic service, like Yo, could be a promising move in the messaging field. The new location service also allows users to "Yo" one another when close, revealing their location.

Pocket

Rumors of a Pocket acquisition have went as far back as mid-2013. The amount of social media done by journalists on Twitter makes the feed sometimes full of stories, and Pocket would be the perfect implementation to save those stories for later.

Pocket also has excellent tools for mobile, allowing users to read stories on the Twitter app without it looking like a direct link to an older browser. Pocket would be a rather large acquisition, given Twitter's current issues in the stock market.

Mic News

This appears to be the acquisition backed up with evidence. Anthony Noto followed four of the news editors earlier this month and several reports claim Twitter is looking into acquiring Mic News.

It is interesting to see Mic News be a possible candidate on Twitter's acquisition list, considering they're just a media company and do not offer any relevant API or upgrades to Twitter's platform.
