(Photo : Audi) Audi's driverless A7 Jack car has set off on a two-day trip to CES 2015, starting in San Francisco.

Audi's driverless car, the A7 Jack, has set off on a two-day 550 mile drive from San Francisco to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

It may be the longest record drive for a driverless car, even though Google has extensively testing its own self-driving car for over two years, that cannot be confirmed.

The driverless car features a host of sensors and cameras, capable of mapping out the road, recognizing signs, objects and cars, and making appropriate decisions.

Audi has programmed the car to auto brake, accelerate and steer when the driver is off the wheel, but still requires the driver to be ready to take over at any stage in the drive.

Other limitations include being unable to drive in urban environments, due to insufficient road mapping. Audi still needs to address some issues with the software, to make sure all objects are accounted for and the car understands what to do at certain points.

The car will be available to view at CES in Las Vegas, Audi will offer tours of the car and an overview of the software and hardware inside the driverless experience.

In terms of consumer launch, Audi still claims it is a few years away from the technology being advanced enough to be used on the road, especially with the current road limitations.

Google is the main competitor against Audi and there is no signs of Google technology on the Audi car. Google has been mapping out various urban environments over the past two years, to make sure Google self-driving cars can drive anywhere.

Tesla Motors is also working on its own automation, although Elon Musk has backed away from the idea of a fully self-driving car, claiming consumers still want to be able to drive their cars.
